Punjab batsman Shubman Gill is ready for an international call-up, amid a strong run of form that has lasted all year and taken his first-class and List A batting averages to the brink of 50.

The Under-19 World Cup-winner has had a fine run in limited-overs cricket during the 2018-19 Indian domestic season, scoring 418 runs in seven innings of the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Punjab, and on Thursday powered India C into the final of the Deodhar Trophy with an unbeaten 106.

Speaking to PTI after the win in Delhi, Gill said he was prepared to make the jump to playing for India. “I am ready. I did not get the opportunity against West Indies but I might get one in the next series. I am just happy scoring runs,” the 19-year-old said on Thursday.

Gill broke into the limelight during the U-19 World Cup at the start of the year, where he made six successive 50-plus scores to finish with 372 runs at 124 in India’s run to the trophy. He was then signed up by Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2018 IPL and scored 203 runs in 11 innings at a strike-rate of 146.04.

Next, he toured England with India A and scored 187 runs in four matches of the team’s successful tri-series campaign, inclusive of two fifties. During the quadrangular series at home featuring Australia A and South Africa A, Gill helped India B to the title with 154 runs in four games and then made 50 and 4 in India A’s four-day win over Australia A.

Asked about his sustained success, and how he deals with expectations, the teenager said he was focused on his batting.

“All these things are there in your mind before you get into the middle. It is all about scoring runs when you get on the field. I don’t think that will happen when I get out. Yes, they recognised you for your Under-19 days but we have to keep performing the same way at the higher levels to get a chance,” said Gill.
