Nic Maddinson, the New South Wales batsman, will return to Australia from Chennai after sustaining a ruptured tenon on his right index finger while fielding for Australia A in the first unofficial Test against India A. He injured himself while taking a catch in the outfield to dismiss India’s batsman Shreyas Iyer in the second innings. David Beakley, the Australia A physio, said Maddinson would be out of action for a few weeks. “Nic’s finger will need to be immobilised in a splint for the next few weeks, so unfortunately he will not be able to participate in the remaining four-day match of this tour,” he was quoted as saying by Wisden India. Maddinson scored a quickfire 37 in his Australia A’s second innings, after having suffered his injury, with three fours an two sixes, as paucity of time disallowed his team a peek at victory, chasing 240. Maddinson, however, had scored a third-ball duck in the first dig. His team had conceded a lead of 33 runs as left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha took five wickets. He is expected to be replaced by Callum Ferguson in the second unofficial Test at the same venue.  “He will return earlier to Australia so that he can continue his rehabilitation in Sydney and prepare for his upcoming cricket commitments with New South Wales,” Beakley said. There will be no additional personnel brought to the squad for him, though. The second four-day game will begin on Wednesday, before the five-match ODI series, all in Chennai. India A will look to dominate with spin in the second game as well, and Australia A will look to negotiate spin better. The tour has Usman Khawaja captaining the Australian side and Cheteshwar Pujara captaining the Indian side.
