The fifth One-Day International (ODI) between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was called off due to incessant rainfall, leaving both teams with two points apiece. India will now face England on January 30 with the equation much simpler for them: whoever wins the final ODI meets Australia in the final. There will be no squabble for bonus points or net run rate. The fifth ODI continued to be marred by rain, as the players were made to come off 16 overs into India’s innings. This after the toss was delayed by about half an hour. George Bailey won the toss and elected to field first as both teams made a number of changes to their sides. David Warner, Bailey, Mitchell Marsh, Josh Hazlewood, and Xavier Doherty came in for Australia. While for India Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma replaced Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood started things off for Australia, while Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings for India. Dhawan fell for just eight off the bowling of Starc, guiding a ball to Aaron Finch at slip to continue his poor form. Ambati Rayudu made his way in at No. 3, and came out swinging, taking India past the 50-run mark along with Rahane. He was out for 23 after hitting Mitchell Marsh for a straight six early on in his innings, only to by the sword trying to hit the same bowler out of the park.

The match was initially reduced to a 44-overs per side contest after the second rain interruption less than three overs into the match. However, after only 16 innings the rain came down hard once again as the players were forced to leave the field for what would be the final time in the match.

Brief scores:

India 69 for 2 in 16 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 28*, Ambati Rayudu 23; Mitchell Starc 1 for 11, Mitchell Marsh 1 for 21) vs Australia
