Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur along with Veda Krishnamurthy guide the team to a challenging total of 150 for the loss of 3 wickets as the India Women played the first Twenty20 International (T20I). The match is being played at the Gokaraju Liala Gangaaraju ACA Cricket Ground, Mulapadu. After a 3-0 in the One-Day International (ODI) series against the same opponents, a confident India Women entered the T20I series against the current World Champions of the format. They soon lost a couple of wickets in the beginning but pulled off a great comeback as skipper Harmanpreet along with Veda put up a big partnership. India won the toss and Harmanpreet Kaur, the new T20I skipper for India, opted to bat first. Vellaswamy Vanitha and Smriti Mandhana opened the innings for India Women. The start was not a smooth one, as India soon lost a couple of wickets. It was Vanitha who lost her wicket to Shakera Selman in the second over of the match. Vanitha was lbw and departed for 3 runs. Smriti Mandhana’s poor form continued as she got out for 11, following Vanitha soon. It was Deandra Dottin who provided West Indies Women with the second success.

Veda Krishnamurthy and Harmanpreet Kaur were the next two batters to take the crease. Veda, who played a winning knock of 71 runs in the last One-Day International (ODI), was one upon whom India Women had a lot of hopes and she did a very good job, bringing the hosts back on track. The duo put up the most crucial partnership and denied the landslide of wickets that the initial losses might have caused India.

Both the players got to their individual half-centuries, putting up a partnership of 100 runs. While Veda played rather slowly as she had to hold the innings together, Harmanpreet paced up and played aggressively. Both helped India make a terrific comeback and Harmanpreet stayed at the crease unbeaten till the end of their innings. Jhulan Goswami hit a six to add some quick runs to the scoreboard. India Women put up a challenging 150 for the loss of 4 wickets at the end of their 20 overs and Harmanpreet remained unbeaten at 68.

The West Indies Women bowlers had started off really well bagging 2 wickets within the first 6 overs. India looked to be at backfoot with the backfoot but they failed to break the big partnership early. Shakera Selman was the most successful with 2 wickets. Deandra Dottin and Chedean Nation were the other two successful bowlers.
