Birmingham: Sanket Sargar created history in the ongoing Commonwealth Games on Saturday as he won a silver medal in the men’s 55kg weightlifting event. The young Indian athlete lifted a massive 113 kg in snatch and 135kg in clean & jerk to get India’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. He scored a total of 248 points in the competition and lost the gold medal by one point to Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Aniq, who scored 249 points after the snatch and clean & jerk segments.
The tournament started wonderfully for Sanket Sargar as he lifted 107kg in his first attempt in snatch. After a successful first attempt, the Indian player lifted 111kg in his second attempt to improve his position. All went well for the Sanket Sargar in the third attempt as well as he lifted 113kg to register another legal attempt and topped the snatch segment.
Sanket Sargar was in top position after the snatch segment and carried the same form in the clean & jerk. He lifted 135kg in his first attempt and looked in prime form. However, in his second and third clean & jerk attempts, the Indian weightlifter looked in physical discomfort as he failed to lift the 139kg weight. He failed to life 139kg weight in his last attempt as well and had to satisfy with a silver medal.

Apart from Sanket Sargar, many other Indian athletes are also in action on day 2 of the competition. A number of Indian stars, including the Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu and the women’s hockey team of India will compete later in the day.
