Delhi: Apr 23, 2013

KXIP 121/5 | Overs 17 | Miller 34*, Chawla 5*

David Miller gets a lucky boundary past the ‘keeper off an edge to sum up Delhi’s night. Piyush Chawla then earns his boundary with a straight drive right out of the sweet spot. A quick single is taken and that’s the end of the game.

KXIP win by 5 wickets with 19 balls to spare.

KXIP 111/5 | Overs 16 | Miller 25*, Chawla 0* OUT! D Hussey 20(21)

David Hussey carts Ashish Nehra straight down the ground for a six! That’s a biggie! However, he perishes the next ball as he goes for another maximum over deep mid-wicket, but finds the toe-end of the bat and the catch is taken in the deep by Botha. The second Strategic Timeout is taken while the new batsman, Piyush Chawla, walks in.

KXIP 101/4 | Overs 15 | Miller 25*, D Hussey 14*

Roelof van der Merwe bowls a maiden over! Are you kidding me?! Punjab need 20 runs from 30 balls.

KXIP 101/4 | Overs 14 | Miller 25*, D Hussey 14*

Punjab are crawling towards a win; they could do with boosting their net run-rate with a surge from here. Plus, I want to go back home early! Punjab need 20 runs from 36 balls.

KXIP 97/4 | Overs 13 | Miller 23*, D Hussey 12*

Umesh Yadav bolws a second tidy over, but Delhi fail to break through the partnership more importantly. Punjab need 24 runs from 42 balls.

KXIP 93/4 | Overs 12 | Miller 22*, D Hussey 9*

David Miller steps down the track to Johan Botha and smacks him wide of long-on for a boundary. Punjab need 28 runs from 48 balls.

KXIP 85/4 | Overs 11 | Miller 15*, D Hussey 8*

David Hussey plays a clever square-cut wide of point for four to bring up 5,000 runs in T20 cricket.

KXIP 77/4 | Overs 10 | Miller 13*, D Hussey 2* OUT! Vohra 8(11)

Manan Vohra is gone! He was put under pressure over the last three overs and ends up getting the leading edge off an attempted sweep. Bowler Johan Botha calls for the catch and pockets it easily.

KXIP 66/3 | Overs 9 | Miller 12*, Vohra 4*

Punjab have scored just 26 runs from the last six overs and their required rate is slowly climbing towards the six-an-over mark, as Ajit Agarkar comes into the attack and gives away four runs. The first Strategic Timeout is taken.

KXIP 62/3 | Overs 8 | Miller 10*, Vohra 2*

Fantastic over from Johan Botha again. Just three runs come off it.

KXIP 59/3 | Overs 7 | Miller 8*, Vohra 0*

Roelof van der Merwe bowls another good over and it’s just three runs added to Punjab’s score. The visitors still don’t need to panic. They have enough balls in hand.

KXIP 56/3 | Overs 6 | Miller 6*, Vohra 0*

Umesh Yadav comes into the attack and bowls a good over, conceding just five runs. Can Delhi sneak in through the gap?

KXIP 51/3 | Overs 5 | Miller 1*, Vohra 0* OUT! Pomersbach 18(10) OUT! Mandeep 24(15)

Roelof van der Merwe comes into the attack and strikes straight away. Luke Pomersbach goes for the big heave down mid-wicket, but is foxed by the quicker one and finds his stumps shattered. Delhi then get another one as David Warner gets a direct throw in from square-leg and Mandeep’s bat is in the air while making ground.

KXIP 45/1 | Overs 4 | Mandeep 23*, Pomersbach 14*

Johan Botha comes into the attack and gets a good over in for Delhi, giving away just five runs. But wickets, and many of them, are the need of the hour for the home side.

KXIP 40/1 | Overs 3 | Mandeep 22*, Pomersbach 10*

Mandeep Singh is in fine touch here as he gets another couple of boundaries, this time off the bowling of Irfan Pathan. The first is via the bottom edge of an attempted pull that runs along to the fine-leg fence, before the Punjab batsman drives beautifully through the covers. Luke Pomersbach then steps in and gets two of his own, first via a powerful pull and then a booming hit down long-off. Punjab are looking to finish this in 10 overs!

KXIP 21/1 | Overs 2 | Mandeep 14*, Pomersbach 1*

Mandeep Singh takes the attack to Delhi as he scores three consecutive boundaries off Ashish Nehra. The first one is a nice square-cut; the second an uppish cover drive; and then another cracking square-cut wide of point.

KXIP 7/1 | Overs 1 | Mandeep 0*, Pomersbach 0* OUT! Gilchrist 6(3)

Adam Gilchrist’s poor form never seems to end as he skies Irfan Pathan and is caught by Johan Botha at mid-off. Good start for Delhi. The only way they can win this is if they take all 10 wickets.

DD 120/7 | Overs 20 | Pathan 14*, Agarkar 9*

Delhi Daredevils manage just five runs in the last over to cap a superb session for the Kings XI Punjab. This should be an easy chase for the visitors and Delhi will have to bowl out of their skins if they want to stay alive in this tournament.

DD 115/7 | Overs 19 | Pathan 13*, Agarkar 6*

Parvinder Awana bowls a high full toss that is worked away by Irfan Pathan to third-man for four. Doing so, he becomes the second player to score 1,000 runs and get 50 wickets in the IPL.

DD 106/7 | Overs 18 | Pathan 8*, Agarkar 2* OUT! Warner 40(36)

Praveen Kumar cleans up David Warner with a yorker after the Australian pulled him for four earlier, as the Daredevils’ hopes of reaching 130 faded away.

DD 99/6 | Overs 17 | Warner 36*, Pathan 7*

David Warner is hanging in but is finding it difficult to get the big shots in. The Daredevils should be targeting at least 130, which might still be too less a target, on this surface.

DD 93/6 | Overs 16 | Warner 35*, Pathan 6*

David Hussey finishes off a fantastic spell of 4-0-16-0 as Delhi slip further away from a competitive total.

DD 90/6 | Overs 15 | Warner 31*, Pathan 0* OUT! Botha 1(2)

Johan Botha holes out to David Hussey at long-off and the Delhi Daredevils are sliding further down the pit here.

DD 86/5 | Overs 14 | Warner 31*, Botha 0* OUT! Juneja 14(20) OUT! Jadhav 0(2)

Manpreet Juneja plays a beautiful pull shot off Harmeet Singh, but unfortunately finds Parvinder Awana at deep backward square-leg. Kedar Jadhav, the new batsman, then mistimes his big drive and skies it straight to Mandeep Singh at point. Are we going to see another low-scoring affair? The second Strategic Timeout is taken.

DD 82/3 | Overs 13 | Warner 31*, Juneja 13*

David Warner gets down on his knee again and hits left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt for four to wide long-on to ruin an otherwise good over.

DD 75/3 | Overs 12 | Warner 26*, Juneja 11*

David Hussey comes back to restore parity as Delhi can get just five runs off the Australian.

DD 70/3 | Overs 11 | Warner 24*, Juneja 8*

David Warner gets down on one knee and clobbers Piyush Chawla over deep mid-wicket for his first maximum. Manpreet Juneja then delicately paddle-sweeps the leg-spinner for four, before Warner comes back to pull him for another boundary off the last over. Sixteen runs come off the over.

DD 54/3 | Overs 10 | Warner 13*, Juneja 3*

David Hussey bowls a second tidy over and at the halfway point, the Daredevils’ run-rate is below six an over.

DD 51/3 | Overs 9 | Warner 11*, Juneja 2*

Piyush Chawla gets a bowl and bowls a superb over. Just a single comes off it and Delhi really need to up their run-rate.

DD 50/3 | Overs 8 | Warner 10*, Juneja 2*

David Hussey comes into the attack and bowls a clean over, conceding just five runs. What will the Daredevils be targeting from here? 150 seems just about achievable if David Warner gets going.

DD 45/3 | Overs 7 | Warner 5*, Juneja 0* OUT! Sehwag 23(21)

Mandeep Singh takes a superb low catch at cover and Punjab have the huge wicket of Virender Sehwag. The Delhi dasher, along with Mandeep himself, wasn’t sure if the catch was taken clean. But after a referral to the third umpire, Sehwag is sent on his way. Back to normal service, the Daredevils. Meanwhile, the first Strategic Timeout is taken.

DD 40/2 | Overs 6 | Sehwag 22*, Warner 5*

David Warner gets his first boundaryas he drives Parvinder Awana past a diving Mandeep Singh at mid-on. Delhi slowly recovering here after the double blow.

DD 32/2 | Overs 5 | Sehwag 19*, Warner 0*

The loss of two wickets makes no difference to Virender Sehwag as he drives Harmeet Singh Bansal straight down the ground one-bounce for four, before pulling the pacer for a six over deep square-leg.

DD 22/2 | Overs 4 | Sehwag 9*, Warner 0* OUT! van der Merwe 8(9)

The Roelof van der Merwe experiment has failed. The South African, sent up the order ahead of David Warner, tries to pull Parvinder Awana’s bouncer, but gets the top edge that goes high in the air and is caught by Mandeep Singh. Perfect start for Punjab here as Awana gets a wicket-maiden.

DD 22/1 | Overs 3 | Sehwag 9*, van der Merwe 8*

Virender Sehwag gets up and running with a crisp square-cut off Praveen Kumar’s short and wide delivery to the deep point fence. Roelof van der Merwe says ‘Anything you can do…’ as he drives the medium-pacer through the covers for his first boundary.

DD 10/1 | Overs 2 | Sehwag 2*, van der Merwe 3*

Parvinder Awana bowls a tight first over as Kings XI Punjab get off to a confident start after the early breakthrough. Virender Sehwag would of course be the prize scalp.

DD 6/1 | Overs 1 | Sehwag 0*, van der Merwe 1* OUT! Jayawardene 4(4)

If you were hoping for Chris Gayle’s ballistics from Bangalore to rub off on the Delhi Daredevils, you’re going to be disappointed. Mahela Jayawardene flicks Praveen Kumar off the pad to the mid-wicket fence for four, before edging to first slip and giving Punjab an early wicket. Surprisingly, it’s not David Warner who has walked out at No 3, but Roelof van der Merwe.

Kings XI Punjab skipper Adam Gilchrist won the toss against Delhi Daredevils and have elected to field first at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
