Ahead of the action-packed final match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 on Sunday, Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma said that his team will aim to play good cricket against Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). RPS have dominated MI throughout the tournament and pointing that out, Rohit said the team will be better in the Sunday final at Hyderabad. He also praised his team for putting up good teamwork throughout IPL 2017. He credited team’s progress to coach Mahela Jayawardene. MI will aim for their third title in the final while RPS will have won their maiden IPL trophy if victorious. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) – Final

Addressing the press on the eve of the final on Saturday, Rohit said, “It has been a team work throughout the tournament and whenever they have had an opportunity, they have put their hand up and taken the responsibility and obviously made sure the team crosses the line. We have certainly not had any individual brilliance throughout the tournament; guys have come at different point and taken up the responsibility.”

“It goes to show that teamwork is so much important— whether it’s bowling or it’s batting, it’s important. Not everyone can have good day everyday; it’s important that guys come up at different point and put their hand up, take up the challenge and deliver and that’s what we have done throughout the season. I am honestly not really worried about the key players not delivering consistently because they haven’t had opportunities consistently. A lot of the games, if you see, the first half was batted by the top three batsmen and like I said, the middle order, as I said, have put their hand up and took the responsibility,” he added.

Rohit also credited Jayawardene for his side’s efforts. “He [Jayawardene] is experienced and has been in that shoe many times before. He has led Sri Lanka successfully over the years and has been part of franchise cricket before as well. I said this before the start of the tournament when we were doing a press conference, his experience will be key to our success and obviously, he has played enough cricket to understand what a team needs whenever you have that momentum, whenever you lose a game, whenever you win the game. It was important and he made sure we keep that calm, don’t get too excited also. These are things you learn from experienced players,” he said.

MI have lost all three games against RPS this year. On this Rohit said, “We have not had a great history against Pune. They have been playing some real good cricket throughout the tournament and it’s just that we were not good on those days. That’s probably the reason we lost the game. So we are going to make sure we are better, we play good cricket and focus on what we need to do as a team. If all those things be looked after, results will take care of itself. You need to concentrate on the process rather than thinking too far ahead.”
