The Glenn Maxwell-led Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) have managed to keep themselves in the hunt for playoffs, by beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 49th match of 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), by 14 runs at Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Sharp fielding was one of the main reasons behind KXIP’s win over KKR in this match. Maxwell seemed ecstatic in the post match ceremony and credited Akshar Patel for setting example by taking two brilliant catches. “(It was) Absolutely outstanding. I asked for an improved performance in the field and I got it. Akshar led by example by taking those catches and with that run-out. Hopefully we can do this in the last two games and give the people of Punjab something to cheer about,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell further applauded spinner Rahul Tewatia, who picked two crucial wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa by conceding only 18 from his spell of 4 overs. Spinners came into the game. Rahul Tewatia bowled well; he got the ball to spin. We were able to stop the bleeding of runs, with the dot balls and conceding not too many boundaries,” Maxwell added.

The KXIP captain accepted that they posted 10-15 runs less and wants his top order batsmen to fire. “I thought the score was about par. We left ourselves little bit short. Maybe 10-15 short. We need to have the top few batters to fire and the rest to bat around. We backed our plans, which we have been asking of ourselves,” Maxwell expressed.

In the end, Maxwell did not forget to mention about the pacers who did a magnificent job in death overs. Maxwell said, “They (the pacers at the end) were the calmest of the night. They knew what they wanted to do. The bowlers did their job, the fielders did their job. We are hanging by the skin of our teeth. It would be nice to win a toss now and then. ”

After this win, KXIP will move to Mumbai to face table toppers Mumbai Indians (MI) at their fortress Wankhede Stadium. Once again, it will be a do-or-die match for KXIP as they need wins in the last two games to make it to the final four.
