Delhi Daredevils (DD) caused an upset in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match 40 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday. The hosts beat the visitors by 6 wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla in a rare win for them. The hallmark of their win was a collective batting effort, as for the first time DD’s batting clicked to bring home a victory. The chief architects of this win were Corey Anderson (41*), makeshift skipper Karun Nair (39) and Rishabh Pant (34). Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Chris Morris also played handy knocks to ensure a smooth finish in the end. Delhi jumped two places after this win and are now placed at the sixth spot in the points table. SRH continue to be at the third spot despite the loss. DD started strong in pursuit of 186. Samson and Nair added 40 runs in 4 overs. Just when the former was looking ominous, Mohammed Siraj got rid of him. Samson failed to pick a slower one and was caught at cover-point by Shikhar Dhawan after scoring 24. The fall of first wicket, however, did not bring the tempo down. Nair surprisingly sent in Pant at No. 3. Nair and Pant then added 32 quick runs before Nair perished for a fine 20-ball 39. He was dismissed by Siddharth Kaul.
Iyer (25-ball 33) and Pant (20-ball 34) then added 37 runs in almost no time. Pant was then the next to go, falling to a peach from Siraj. After hitting a six on the previous ball, Pant got a fiery yorker that got the better of him. Another vital partnership followed between Iyer and Anderson before Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed the former in the closing stages of the game. But from there on, Anderson and Morris (15* off 7) finished off the game for DD with ease.
Earlier, SRH’s innings’ highlight was Yuvraj Singh’s unbeaten 70 off 41 balls, adding 93 unbroken runs with Moises Henriques (25*). From 92 for 3, the two batsmen had guided SRH to a competitive 185 for 3. Dhawan and David Warner put up 53 runs on the board inside the powerplay overs.
Warner (30) was the first to go, as Mohammed Shami uprooted his stump with a fiery Yorker. Dhawan (28) meanwhile was undone by an Amit Mishra-googly. Yuvraj and Kane Williamson then added 17 runs after which the latter departed for a run-a-ball 24.
From here on, it had been an all-Yuvraj show. The southpaw who was on 19 from 21 balls at the end of the 15th over switched gears in the final 5 overs, ending on 70 off 41 balls. He scored 51 off his last 20 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six. For DD, spinners Amit Mishra and Umesh Yadav managed to contain the flow of runs. Shami got 2 important wickets, which earned him the Man of the Match award. Mishra got 1, while Rabada went for 59 from his spell of 4 overs.
Brief scores:
Sunrisers Hyderabad 185 for 3 in 20 overs (Yuvraj Singh 70*, David Warner 30; Shikhar Dhawan 28; Mohammed Shami 2 for 36, Amit Mishra 1 for 23) lost to Delhi Daredevils 189 for 4 in 19.1 overs (Corey Anderson 41*, Karun Nair 39, Rishabh Pant 34; Mohammed Siraj 2 for 41, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1 for 33) by 6 wickets.
