Playing their last game of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, Delhi Daredevils (DD) faced a 10-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi. Batting first, RCB posted a challenging total of 161 riding on impressive batting from Virat Kohli (58) and Chris Gayle (48). In their chase, DD batting crumbled yet again despite getting good starts. Rishabh Pant (45) kept the hosts in the hunt but the likes of Shreyas Iyer (32) and Karun Nair (26) failed to convert their starts as DD eventually lost by 10 runs, in a game that went to the ultimate over. Talking about the side’s performance in IPL 2017 and this game, DD skipper Zaheer Khan spoke about the inexperience in their batting order. “This has been the story of the season. When we look back we feel we needed to have experience in the batting order. On this kind of wicket when it is slowing down, you need someone who can take it calmly,” he said in the post-match presentation.
DD have had an inconsistent IPL 2017 season losing eight of the total fourteen games they played this season. But despite not being qualified for the playoffs, Zaheer was happy the way his side progressed through the tournament.
“The game is changing and it is good you can experiment with field placements and all. All and all it is good for cricket. I love every bit of it,” added Zaheer, who played his 100th IPL match and claimed the wicket of match top-scorer Virat Kohli.
When asked about which team from the top-four had the chance of winning the IPL 2017, Zaheer was quick to reply saying Mumbai Indians (MI) or Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
“I think Mumbai Indians (on asked about which team does he think has a chance this year), they have been very consistent and KKR too will have a great run in the play-offs,” Zaheer concluded
