Has the change in guards for Delhi Daredevils (DD) brought turned around the fortunes of the side in VIVO IPL 2018? We shall know it in a while. However, DD have surely taken the stepping stone. In a brutal display of batting by DD’s new skipper Shreyas Iyer, the side finished with 219 for 4 in 20 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 26 of the tournament, at Feroz Shah Kotla. This is DD’s second highest score in IPL history, the first being 231 for 4 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the same venue. Iyer struck a 40-ball 93* to register an IPL record.
He now has most runs on captaincy debut in IPL. He reached the landmark when he crossed 64, surpassing Aaron Finch’s score that the Australian had piled up for the now defunct Pune Warriors against KXIP in 2013.
Only 4 batsmen have scored fifties on captaincy debut in IPL. Iyer joined the elite list of Finch, Murali Vijay and Adam Gilchrist.
IPL 2018, Match 26: Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw muscle DD to 219 for 4 vs KKR
Iyer,23, shared a 61-run stand with Prithvi Shaw, who at 18 years 169 days joined Sanju Samson as he became the joint youngest half-centurion in IPL.
Earlier, Iyer became DD’s 11th captain and also the fourth youngest player to lead in IPL after Virat Kohli, Steven Smith and Suresh Raina.
