IPL 2019, SRH vs CSK: David Warner, Jonny Bairstow fire Sunrisers Hyderabad to six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings

Sunrisers Hyderabad were back to winning ways thanks to their usual protagonists – David Warner, Jonny Bairstow and Rashid Khan against a much depleted Chennai Super Kings, who missed their talismanic skipper MS Dhoni to a stiff back and looked not so great under the leadership of Suresh Raina in Match 33 of IPL 2019 at the Rajiv Gandhi international stadium, Hyderabad on Wednesday.

CSK missed a chance to secure their playoff berth losing by six wickets, after posting a below par total of 132 for 5, despite winning the toss and despite openers Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson providing a good start.

That good start was however nullified by SRH bowlers led by Rashid, who picked 2/17 in his four and was aided by tidy spells from Vijay Shankar (1/11), Khaleel Ahmed (1/22) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Without Dhoni, CSK failed to get going in the death overs as only 24 runs were added in the last five over, that too without losing a wicket.

On the contrary, a rapid start by Warner, who scored 50 off 25 balls was well capitalised by Baristow, who batted through the innings for a well-made 61 not out off 44 balls and led SRH to their fourth win in eight matches. MATCH HIGHLIGHTS: SRH vs CSK

Warner was removed by Deepak Chahar before Imran Tahir proceeded to remove SRH skipper Kane Williamson and Shankar in quick succession.

But SRH’s brittle middle-order was held together by Bairstow, who upped the ante with two sixes off Karn Sharma and eventually took his team home with 19 balls to spare.

Earlier, du Plessis (45) and Watson (31) got together for a stand of 79 runs, but CSK slumped from a healthy 81/1 in 10.2 overs to 101/4 in 14.4 overs, with Dhoni’s replacement Sam Billings managing a three-ball duck, undone by a Khaleel slower one.

Shahbaz Nadeem, getting a game for SRH drew first blood when he castled Watson. Watson, struggling in IPL 2019 so far, was cautious throughout his innings , with du Plessis donning the aggressor’s role. Du Plessis’ 45 came off 31 balls with the help of three fours and three sixes while Watson 31 came off 29 balls, hitting four fours.

After Nadeem broke the stand, Shankar and Rashid tied down CSK. Shankar removed du Plessis in the 11th over while Rashid struck twice in the 14th over to remove stand-in skipper Raina (13) and Kedar Jadhav (1).

By the 15th over, CSK found themselves stuttering at 102/5. Ravindra Jadeja and Ambati Rayudu failed to get going with SRH bowlers managing to maintain a lid on the scoring rate. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 10 off 20 balls while Rayudu struggled, scoring 25 off 21 balls.

Brief Scores: SRH 137/4 (Jonny Baristow 61*, David Warner 50; Imran Tahir 2/20) beat CSK 132/5 (Faf du Plessis 45, Shane Watson 31; Rashid Khan 2/17) by six wickets
