Karn Sharma, the leg-spinning all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh has been sold for a whooping INR 3.75 crores to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SH) In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 auction. Sharma was a part of Hyderabad team last season and has been picked up because he was an important part of the franchise last year.

Karn was a success as he formed an ideal foil to Amit Mishra. Both being leg-spinners, Karn has a more restrictive role when compared to Mishra. However, he did get his wickets and also contributed with a few crucial performances with the bat. But, from a base price of INR 30 lakhs, he had risen to INR 3.75 crores. This again emphasiSes on how different conditions come into play during the auctions.

Teams do look for those utility players, who contribute with both bat and ball as the format gives room for that. However, many are surprised with the amount of money spent on him. Also, with the inclusion of Irfan Pathan and Parvez Rasool in the team, it is difficult to see Karn  getting a game. Both Pathan and Rasool are all-rounders and can fit the bill.

Karn was named in the Indian ICC World T20 2014 probables. However, Pathan has a lot of international experience behind him and Rasool has been in the Indian team last year. Rasool can provide with more variety with his off-spin and could just beat Sharma in the race for spots.
