Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had started the day under troubled conditions. They had already retained five players (MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Dwayne Bravo), which meant that they did not have any Right to Match cards remaining.

Biggest purchase: Faf du Plessis and Brendon McCullum: two competent, extremely level-headed international captains who would complement MS Dhoni, leading to an excellent nucleus.

Biggest surprise: Matt Henry. It’s a wonder that nobody asked “Matt who?”

Most confusing move: Spending INR two crores on Ashish Nehra, who may not last 15 days.

Probable dark horse: Samuel Badree.

Team strength: A core that has played several seasons together — and has done so quite successfully.

Team weakness: Lacks a strike bowler.
