IPL Auction 2017: KKR aiming to build a new-look squad for IPL 2017?

With the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) set to begin just after couple of months, the IPL Auction 2017, which is also in its 10th edition, is officially underway, and is being held in Bengaluru on Monday. The first session (morning session) of the IPL Auction 2017 is over, as the franchise members have gone into the lunch break. The session has so far witnessed few of the most crazy and bizarre bids and buying of players. The same stand for the former and record two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as they have so far bought just three players, and the striking feature of these three players have, is that they are fast bowlers. KKR has roped in players in the form of Trent Boult, the New Zealand fast bowler for INR 5 crores, along with England all-rounder Chris Woakes for INR 4.2 crores, and Indian all-rounder Rishi Dhawan for INR 55 lakhs. The thing which has surprised most of the KKR fans and experts following KKR’s involvement in the IPL Auction 2017 so far, is that KKR till date has mostly relied on spinners in their side, owing to the tradition slow and turning tracks at their home ground in the historic Eden Gardens Stadium. However, KKR’s decision to buy fast bowlers has certainly raised some eyebrows. IPL 2017 Auction: Full list of players unsold for Indian Premier League 10
Players | Type | Price Paid (INR) |
Trent Boult | Bowler | ₹ 5,00,00,000 |
Chris Woakes | All-Rounder | ₹ 4,20,00,000 |
Rishi Dhawan | All-Rounder | ₹ 55,00,000 |
It should be noted that whatever is being done by KKR in the IPL Auction 2017, is being strictly done under the supervision and involvement of the reigning KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir, who has led KKR to the twin IPL Championship wins till date. Therefore, with that being said, KKR’s decision to go with fast bowlers in the side, must have something to do with the gameplan, which is most likely to change. Although no official word has come from any of the KKR members, and with the Auction being far from over, it is futile to draw conclusion lines or analyse things as of now. KKR had a purse balance of INR 197,500,000 before the start of the IPL Auction 2017, while they had 14 players in the side, including four overseas players. The current buy has increased their overseas strength to six, while they have 17 players in the side. Therefore, with the current shopping which KKR have done so far in the IPL Auction 2017, the have a purse balance of INR 10 crores, which should be enough for them to see out a few more big players in the side. Although KKR are known to be the silent predators when it comes to IPL Auction, they can come up with big surprises nevertheless.
