Ireland have handed an international call-up to 20-year-old seam bowler David Delany and recalled left-arm quick Joshua Little for the limited-overs series against Afghanistan starting on Monday.

Delany’s inclusion for the three ODIs and three T20Is comes after he took two wickets for Ireland A against Bangladesh A in a T20 in Dublin this week, while Little returns to the T20I squad after resuming his cricket career during the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand the start of the year, taking seven wickets. Little last played for Ireland in January 2017, before he took the decision to give up cricket for further studies.

Delany had been added to Ireland’s squad for two T20Is against India in July “in a development capacity” once Little had suffered an injury setback.

Also named in the squad for the ODIs and T20Is is James Shannon, who last played during the India T20Is but has not had a chance to add to his sole ODI cap earned in 2013 against Pakistan. The wicketkeeper-batsman Stuart Poynter has been omitted.

“The T20I squad is one with an experienced spine surrounded by young, exciting and talented players who want to show they belong in the international arena,” said Ireland chief selector Andrew White while announcing the squad. “We’re very keen to see what younger players like David Delany and Josh Little can bring to the set-up. Josh, for instance, brings us some much-needed variation with his left-arm pace and ability to bat powerfully down the order, and as we know variation is key to success in the T20 format.”

Gary Wilson will lead Ireland in the T20Is and William Porterfield will the skipper the ODI team.
