Darren Sammy notched up a ninth One-Day International (ODI) fifty off 45 balls. Lendl Simmons and Sammy have rescued West Indies from a precariously placed 87 for five to a score of respectability in the Pool B match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 against Ireland. Live Updates: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Pool A game at Christchurch
Ireland had the West Indies on a leash as George Dockrell inflicted incisive blows, snaffling three quick wickets of Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels and Dinesh Ramdin. Sammy and Simmons began cautiously but are beginning to cut loose. A score close of around 270 is in the offing, provided the pair continues to bat a little longer. Earlier Ireland won an important toss at the picturesque Saxton Oval in Nelson and asked West Indies to take first strike. The move paid dividends as Dwayne Smith was dismissed early into the innings followed by the run-out of Darren Bravo which had the West Indies tottering at 31 for two. Chris Gayle played an uncharacteristically subdued innings before losing patience and holing out to long-on. The wicket of Gayle marked the beginning of a mini collapse before the sixth wicket partnership between Simmons and Sammy saved West Indies the blushes.
