Irfan Pathan was given a shot at redemption when he was selected for the remaining two ODI against West Indies on Friday. The 27-year-old said every player goes through a rough patch and thanked former MRF Pace Foundation coach TA Sekhar for his revival.

“Everybody has a bad phase. And they learn from it. For me the last two years were very challenging and it was a life-learning experience. The family support was crucial in this phase,” the Baroda all-rounder was quoted saying in DNA.

“TA Sekhar’s inputs have proved to be beneficial for a lot of pacers across the country and I am one of them who has immensely benefited from his technical inputs. He discussed a few corrective measures regarding my wrist position which has helped me get my swing back. The hard work is certainly paying off,” he said.

He said he was waiting for this moment for more over an year and is really excited about the comeback.

“It took a couple of minutes for the feeling to sink in. I am really excited at being selected and I’m looking forward to it.

“For more than one year I have been working for this day. It has finally paid off. My hard work, wishes of my fans and Allah’s blessings have got me back into Team India. It would be difficult for me to say whether it’s more of happiness or a relief that I am back but I would like to make full use of the opportunities available. Not many people get a chance to represent the country and I have been fortunate enough to do that and, God willing, would like to represent my nation for a long time,” he remarked.

Irfan felt that the tough times in his career made his return all the more worthwhile.

“It makes every second of the struggle worthwhile. You feel blessed when your hard work is rewarded. The dream to play for the country has always been there. When it is fulfilled, you feel nothing gets better than this. Having all the luxuries in life — having a big car, big house — nothing comes close to this,” said Pathan.
