Ishant Sharma was handed over one Test ban after his on-field altercation with Sri Lanka pacer Dhammika Prasad in the third Test of the three-match series. India won the series after trailing 0-1, marking a series victory on Sri Lankan soil after 22 years. Not only that, India registered their first overseas victory on foreign soil after 50 months. Amidst the excitement of the final Test, Ishant was charged of breaching ICC Code of Conduct, along with Prasad, Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne. Ishant’s father Vijay Kumar rebuked his son’s antics and said the lanky pacer should learn to control his emotions. Ishant Sharma’s display of aggression pathetic, feels Bishan Singh Bedi
“Yes, what Ishant did on the field was not good. He has been rightly punished by the ICC. Ishant should have controlled his emotions,” Ishant’s father Vijay Kumar was quoted as saying by mid-day. “He was never so aggressive during his childhood days. Perhaps, in the excitement he was overjoyed and crossed the limit and in the heat of the moment, lost temper,” Sharma added. Ishant Sharma to Dhammika Prasad: Hit me on my head!
Even Ishant’s coach Shravan Kumar was unhappy about the pacer’s behaviour. He said, “Ishant crossed the limit this time. Sledging is a part of the game, but by making gestures he invited more trouble from the match referee. I think he got carried away with the dressing room atmosphere, especially when you have a captain and Team Director who talk so much about aggression. He was never so aggressive as a child. I will definitely ask him to control his aggression. By now, he must have realised that he is the one who suffered in this incident. The team management hasn’t come forward to request the match referee to remove his ban. Ishant needs to be counselled and learn the art of sledging, which is a very subtle act.”
