Jason Holder‘s four-wicket haul and opener, Johnson Charles‘ impressive knock of 55 helped West Indies beat Ireland by six wickets in their final group stage clash of Pool B, match 41 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at the McLean Park in Napier on Sunday. With this victory, West Indies almost sealed their quarter-final spot in the tournament. However, they could still get knocked out if the tie between Pakistan and Ireland ends in draw. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: POINTS TABLE
Earlier, West Indies skipper, Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bowl first as UAE were bowled out for 175. Explosive batsman, Chris Gayle is missed the tie after being declared unfit and Johnson Charles came in for him. For UAE, Manjula Guruge made his way in back to the squad.
UAE were off to a worst possible start, losing six quick wickets in 14 overs. However, it was an unexpected return from the UAE batsmen in the form of Amjad Javed and Nasir Aziz, who put up an impressive 107-run stand for the seventh wicket, followed by their respective maiden half-centuries that helped UAE reach the total. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: SCHEDULE & MATCH DETAILS
West Indies were off to a good start in an aggressive manner as both the openers, Dwayne Smith and Charles looked to go for the shots from the beginning, owing to the condition to chase the target of 176 down in 36.2 overs in order to go past Pakistan’s current run rate. However, at the score of 33, it was Smith, who departed for just 15 in being too agressive and falling to Manjula Guruge.
With just 20 added to the total, it was senior-pro, Marlon Samuels, who fell for mere nine to the same man in a similar fashion. However, it was followed by a healthy 56-run stand for the third wicket between Charles and Jonathan Carter. It was at the score of 103, when Charles departed after scoring his third ODI half-century at the score of 55 to Amjad Javed.
Soon to follow him was hard-hitter, Andre Russell, who fell to the same man for mere seven after being caught by the same man. Nevertheless, it was the pair of Carter and wicketkeeper-batsman, Denesh Ramdin, who took the charge and steered West Indies home to a comfortable six wicket win over the minnows within the required over and more-or-less, safely placed themselves in the quarter-finals list, but are still in the scare of crashing out of the tournament at an early stage. Carter also scored his maiden ODI half-century in the process. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: Complete Coverage
