The fifth and final Test between India and England at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai turned out to be special for the new guns of the Indian side. After a brilliant 199 from KL Rahul, Karun Nair got to the landmark of 200 runs. Nair scored his double-hundred in only his third Test innings. No Indian has reached the landmark sooner in his Test career. With the innings, Nair not only helped India maintain their command in the series but also emulated Dilip Sardesai and Vinod Kambli — the other two Indians to have converted their maiden Test tons to double-hundreds.
Sardesai was the first Indian to have done this. His double-hundred came against New Zealand in 1964-65 at Brabourne Stadium, Bombay (now Mumbai). His unbeaten 200 (in his 26th innings) helped India draw the Test after being asked to follow-on. The other instance came from Vinod Kambli, who took only 4 Test innings since debut to make his maiden Test century to a double-hundred playing against England at Wankhede Stadium, Bombay. Kambli scored 224 that powered India to pile on 536 and helped India win the Test by an innings and 13 runs. Karun has now surpassed both Sardesai and Kambli. His was the 37th instance in the history of Test cricket.
