Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of South Africa in Australia 2016-17. This is the second Test and here you will get all the live updates of Day Two. The match will be played at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart. South Africa kept their surge to supremacy going strong bundling the mighty Australian for a mere 85, thanks to Vernon Philander and Kyle Abbott. In reply, South Africa cautiously ended Day One on 171 for 5 with a lead of 86-runs with Temba Bevuma and Quinton de Kock unbeaten on 38* & 28* runs respectively. Philander and Abbott wrecked havoc on “English-like” conditions with 5 and 3 wickets respectively as the Australian batting line-up displayed its inefficacy to play quality swing and seam bowling. Only two batsmen managed to reach double figures with in Smith and debutant Joe Mennie. Smith remained unbeaten on 48 runs. Philander’s victims included David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Adam Voges, Joe Mennie and Nathan Lyon, while Abbott scalps were Joe Burns, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
The pair picked 8 wickets for 82 runs combined in 22 overs. South Africa in reply were cautious and determined not to hand easy wickets, Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar added 44 runs for the first wicket to give a steady start.
Australia’s Mitchell Starc had different plans as he notched up 3 back-to-back wickets to push South Africa on the back foot. But unlike Australia, South Africa kept partnerships coming, du Plessis and Amla added 30 runs, with the latter going to make 47 runs.
Amla continued to add runs with Temba Bevuma who constructed a 52-run stand. Post Amla’s wicket Quinton de Kock and Bevuma held crease and added 39 quick runs to get their team past Australia’s total. South Africa will hope that Bevuma and de Kock continue running riot over the hosts bowlers and get SA to a mammoth first innings lead.
