It is stumps on Day 2: Bangladesh are 214/5, Shakib 18(8)*, Mushfiqur Rahim 2(7)*

Bangladesh have imploded, just as they have invariably over last one year. From 192/2, last half an hour’s mayhem has left them at 214/5. They could have been 6 down, as Shakib was hell-bent on throwing his wicket away. However, he has survived for now. The wicket is still good for batting but first innings was always going to be crucial. If Bangladesh still have to get the lead and keep any hope of winning this match alive, they will have to bat out of their skins on Day 3 before hoping for a Sri Lankan collapse.

  • 5:18 PM IST

Lakmal joins the party now, as Bangladesh lose 3rd wicket in the space of 7 balls. Sabbir Rahman falls to a short ball to leg gully. It was a trap which he has fallen for. A fast, short delivery took the batsman by surprise, who gave a simple catch to Dhananjaya. From 192/2, Bangladesh are 198/5.

  • 5:16 PM IST

OUT! Sabbir Rahman c de Silva b Lakmal 42(54)

  • 5:12 PM IST

Sandakan’s on a roll. He has taken a couple of wickets; 2 in 2 to be precise, but missed out on a hat-trick. Imrul Kayes (34) was the first one to go, who was adjudged LBW after a wrong’un kept low and hit his pads. On the very next ball, nightwatchman Taijul Islam was given LBW as well after technology’s intervention. Bangladesh wasted a review on a nightwatchman, would you believe that?

  • 5:06 PM IST

Lakshan Sandakan is on a hat-trick!

  • 5:06 PM IST

OUT! Taijul Islam lbw b Sandakan 0(1)

  • 5:00 PM IST

OUT! Imrul Kayes lbw b Sandakan 34(78)

  • 4:40 PM IST

Imrul Kayes gets a reprieve in the 52nd over. Batting on 25, he went for a pull to a delivery bowled outside off and ended up skying it on the leg side. Dinesh Chandimal came running in from deep square and dropped a sitter at deep square leg. Lucky escape this, and Imrul needs to make it count.

  • 4:32 PM IST

BAN 162/2 in 50 overs. Imrul 23*, Sabbir 23*. With half an hour’s play left in the game, Bangladesh have consolidated their position. Both Imrul and Sabbir are batting on 23 each and are looking extremely comfortable in the middle. The wicket is getting better and better for batting. Though there still is assistance for spinners, overall it is a good track to bat. First innings’ scores will determine the fate of this match.

  • 4:08 PM IST

BAN 144/2, 45 overs. Imrul Kayes 20*, Sabbir Rahman 8*. It is drinks in the final session on Day 2. Bangladesh are going steady after losing openers Tamim (49) and Sarkar (61). Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman are doing well at new positions. Imrul has mostly played as an opener in his career while Sabbir has batted at No. 6/7 in his short career. But Mahmudullah’s omission opened the doors for him at No. 4. Lankan bowlers have done well to get the set openers, but they need to sustain this pressure to prevent Bangladesh from getting near their total.

  • 3:53 PM IST

Sandakan, the Chinaman, has dismissed Sarkar. It took a special delivery to remove the well-set batsman. The ball was wrong’un, which Sarkar failed to pick. It went through the gap between his bat and pads to hit the stumps.

Bangladesh have a new No. 4, as Sabbir Rahman walks out to join Imrul. BAN 136/2; trail by 2020 runs.

  • 3:47 PM IST

OUT! Soumya Sarkar b Sandakan 61(121)

  • 3:32 PM IST

UPDATE: Soumya Sarkar has brought up his 4th Test fifty. With it, he becomes second Bangladeshi opener after Tamim Iqbal to make three successive Test fifties. He is also the first visiting opener since Virender Sehwag in 2010 to register 3 fifty-plus scores in a Test series in Sri Lanka.

  • 3:21 PM IST

Bangladesh 111/1, 34 overs. Soumya Sarkar 47*, Imrul Kayes 9*. Bangladesh continue to bat in the same confident manner post tea as well. The good news from their camp is Imrul Kayes, who had an injury concern on Day 1, has walked out to bat. This means Bangladesh have all their batsmen available in the match. Sarkar is approaching his fifty. This has been a fine knock from him. His team would want him to continue in the same fashion and make the start count.

  • 2:47 PM IST

Herath gets his man. Tamim has to finally depart after surviving a few close calls. This time, there were two sounds as ball went past the bat, which prompted Aleem Dar to rule him not out. But Herath went for a review, which suggested the ball had pitched in line, the impact was in line and it was hitting the stumps. Importantly, there was no bat involved. The decision had to be overturned again. With this, Bangladesh are 95/1 at tea; they trail by 243. A good start this for the tourists and the session belonged to them.

    It is time for TEA

  • 2:40 PM IST

OUT! Tamim Iqbal lbw b Herath 49(91)

  • 2:32 PM IST

Tamim 44*, Soumya 36* have taken Bangladesh to 86/0. Both are doing a fabulous job by keeping the Lankan bowlers at bay and score board ticking. Herath has shuffled his bowlers well here, but success has eluded him. Lakshan Sandakan, the Chinaman bowlers, was however brought in as late as the 23rd over.

  • 2:10 PM IST

BAN 54/0 in 18 overs. Tamim 23*, Soumya 27*. Bangladesh have got off to a solid start in reply to Sri Lanka’s 338. Tamim and Soumya have added 50 runs for the first wicket. This is just the kind of start the tourists needed on a track which will turn more and more as the match progresses. With an army of spinners in the Lankan camp, things might get difficult for them as the match progresses. But for now, this is a fantastic start for them. The openers must look to make the starts count and build a solid platform for a good first innings total.

  • 1:48 PM IST

We spoke about Herath’s 997 FC wickets earlier today. He’s now 10th on the list of most FC wickets by spinners from the Indian subcontinent. Take a look at the list:

  • 1:41 PM IST

Good start by Bangladesh this. They are now 38/0 after 12 overs, trail exactly by 300 runs. Tamim is unbeaten on 20 while Sarkar is playing on 14. Spin is in operation from both the ends, with Herath and Perera bowling in tandem. Success has eluded the hosts so far.

  • 1:32 PM IST

BAN 29/0. 9 overs. Tamim 18*, Soumya 7*: It is Rangana Herath time. The Sri Lankan captAIN has introduced himself into the attack now.

  • 1:23 PM IST

    And this as well:

  • 1:23 PM IST

Meanwhile, there’s some Indian flavour at the ground. Sample this:

  • 1:22 PM IST

Bangladesh 15/0 in 6 overs. Tamim 9*, Soumya 6*. The highlights of first six overs’ play have been a missed chance for Sri Lanka and a couple of delightful boundaries. Lakmal appealed for LBW against Tamim in the 3rd over, but his teammates did not join him. Umpire turned it down but had the Lankans gone for a review, they could’ve got the first breakthrough. Lucky escape for Tamim. The two lefties, meanwhile, have used their feet well against Perera to get a boundary each.

  • 1:12 PM IST

The cricket professor is back with an insight on Soumya Sarkar this time:

  • 1:02 PM IST

BAN 2/0 in 2 overs. Tamim Iqbal 2*, Soumya Sarkar 0*. Bangladesh have started their reply. There is no change in the opening position, with Tamim and Soumya coming out to bat. There is no Imrul Kayes, who got his toe injured on Day 1 while fielding at forward short leg. There is no word on whether he will be available to bat or not.
For Sri Lanka, Suranga Lakmal and Dilruwan Perera have opened the attack. Remember, they are playing with only 1 specialist pacer, and hence Dilruwan the off-spinner is bowling from the other end. They do have Asela Gunaratne as a back-up pacer, and might use him at some stage in the game.

Sri Lanka have gained an unassailable 1-0 lead after winning the first Test at Galle by a massive margin of 259 runs. Bangladesh bowlers had a dream start, reducing Sri Lanka to 70 for 4 by lunch, but Dinesh Chandimal played a lone hand on Day One and took his side to a decent score of 238 for 7. At stumps, he was unbeaten on 86 along with Herath, who was on 18. Chandimal braved all odds to get to his 12th Test fifty. He took on the bowlers with some luck going his way and scripted a Sri Lankan comeback after the hosts were at one stage tottering at 70 for 4. He found able allies, in Dhananjaya de Silva and Niroshan Dickwella, both of whom scored 34, and then in Herath, with whom he was involved in an unbroken 43-run eighth wicket stand. Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Day 2 Preview

For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman and Mehedi Hasan Miraz took two wickets each while Subashis Roy, Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam got one apiece. Bangladesh did well in the field on the first day, with their bowlers being right on money for most part of the game. Their fielders took some sharp catches. Chandimal plays lone hand as SL end Day 1 of 2nd Test vs BAN at 238 for 7

With Day 1 witnessing the honours being shared, Day Two is going to be exciting. Sri Lanka’s record at P Sara Oval stands at 9 wins and 6 losses from 19 matches. Bangladesh, meanwhile, have a poor record at the ground, having lost all 3 Tests they have featured in. They would hope the 100th Test turns out special and they change this record.
