South Africa will look reduce the first innings deficit and take lead in their first innings, resuming at 86 for one on the third day of the opening Test against England at Kennington Oval.

South Africa trail by a further 299 runs, with Graeme Smith (37) and Hashim Amla (47) at the crease.

On the second day, bowlers swung the game in favour of South Africa as England stumbled to 385 all-out after tea, resuming at 267 for three on the second day.

James Anderson produced a superb delivery in the third over of the innings, swinging the ball in and striking Petersen on the back pad to win a leg before wicket decision from umpire Steve Davis.

Petersen’s dismissal continued the trend of a day which saw bowlers dominate for long periods under an overcast sky in south London.

However, South African captain Smith and Amla saw their team through to the close to keep the tourists in contention after England’s first innings of 385 all out.

Brief Scores: England 385 (Alastair Cook 115, Jonathan Trott 71; Morne Morkel 4 for 72, Jacques Kallis 2 for 38) lead South Africa 86 for 1 (Graeme Smith 37*, Hashim Amla 47*; James Anderson 1 for 27) by 299 runs.
