Sachin Tendulkar: “We met in the Wellingdon club. We were only teenagers and somebody had to look after us. At that time, that rickshaw ride was really comfortable, with all our kit bags compared to trains a nd buses. Even Mr Sunil Gavaskar was present. It made it even more special.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sportspersons from various fields. Me Bawa, thank you so much for everything. Enjoy every moment. There will be challenges..embrace them. Don’t take shortcuts.

Sports journalists play huge role in making players and supporting players. To be able to perform consistently over the years, the mental frame of mind has to be positive at all times. Trust your instincts and don’t think about anyone else.

Any sportsperson and sports journalist, the relationship is interlinked. My first interaction with journalists was in 86-87 where the questions were longer than the answers. I’ve tried to make my answers longer by the years.

I would be failing in my duty if I did not acknowledge the support I have received from you. There have been opinions, criticisms, some fiction along the way. But I cannot complain about the entire package.

I’m going to take this opportunity to be a protective father. My son has played his first official club match. When I started playing, at no stage I had this pressure from anyone to follow my fathers footsteps. My son has started his career and its a humble request to let him live his life like a normal 14-year-old and fall in love with the sport. Fall madly in love with the score. I would appreciate if everyone allows him to be himself, enjoys his identity and loves his cricket.”

Yasin Merchant: He has been labelled as god of cricket. I would beg to differ. Gods or their avatars come down with miraculous powers. But he did not come down with miraculous powers. I see in him a human being like me. He is a superhuman.

5.50 pm: Lifetime achievement award: Marzban ‘Bawa’ Patel (hockey coach)

“I am privileged to be here. I feel small being here among all stars. I am honoured to be here and meet Sachin for the second time. I would be highly obliged if you could do something to help other sports. Treat players like they are your own children,” Patel said

5.45 pm: Sportspersons felicitated: Tanvi Lad (badminton), Mahesh Mangaokar (squash), Armaan Jaffer (cricket), Dipika Joseph (kabaddi), Poonam Raut (cricket), Abhishek Nayar (cricketer of the year), Ajit Agarkar (Mumbai Ranji Trophy-winning captain), Rahi Sarnobat (sportsperson of the year – female), Aditya Mehta (sportsperson of the year – male).

Agarkar: Winning the Ranji Trophy as captain probably the proudest moment of my career. A team award beats an individual award. I am glad on behalf of the team to accept the award.

Sachin Tendulkar was felicitated by the SJAM in 1988 after his world record partnership with Vinod Kambli. He was taken from Bandra to Willingdon Club in a rickshaw!

5.20pm: Among the journalists who were felicitated are: ATP Sarathi, former Indian Express, aged 92; GK Menon, Times of India and Indian Express; Raju Bharatan, legendary radio journalist;Shivshankar Singh; VV Karmarkar; Girish Dixit, photographer and racing journalist; Bhaji Bharucha; Prabhakar ‘PM’ Shirodkar.

Indian Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay: Anand will not be at an advantage playing in Chennai. But he is someone who will never complain. A master will always beat a street fighter. I think the match will be very one-sided: either the master will beat the street fighter easily or vice versa. Lets all hope that Anand does well and wins the title.

4.55pm: Gokhale: It’s for the first time that Anand is facing a world champion. Carlsen is a blitz champion. If the match between Anand and Carlsen is tied, it will go into a blitz game. Both Anand and Carlsen are very talented. Chess will be benefitted whether Anand wins or not.

4.50pm: Sachin Tendulkar has arrived at the venue with wife Anjali in tow.

4.40pm: Raghunandan Gokhale, Dronacharya Award winner talks of the upcoming chess World Championship match between Vishwanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen. “It has a 25.5 million dollar prize fund. Anand will be lucky whether he wins or loses since the dollar is going up. Anand is an example of a really good sportsperson…a gentleman.

4.35pm: Indian badminton legend Nandu Natekar, who is the chief guest, is recounting a few anecdotes from his career. He is also praising the recently concluded Indian Badminton League (IBL).

4.20pm: The function has just begun. The CK Nayudu hall is packed to the brim with luminaries from the sports and journalism fields in Mumbai. Among the cricketers present are Mumbai Ranji captain Ajit Agarkar, all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and young Armaan Jaffer. Sachin Tendulkar is expected to arrive shortly.

The Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM) are set to hold their annual awards at CK Nayudu hall, Cricket Club of India (CCI) . SJAM has planned to felicitate Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar for achieving the record of 100 international hundreds.
