The third and final Test between India and Sri Lanka, being held at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi, has already made a lot of headlines. Not just for the status of the match, but it was mostly due to the alarming level of pollution in the city that has caused the headlines. On Sunday, the Sri Lankan players, while bowling and fielding, faced difficulty in breathing, leading to a few players playing by wearing masks. Coach Nic Pothas complained that a few players were vomiting following an unhealthy outing in the polluted atmosphere. Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee sympathised with the Sri Lankan players and agreed that the situation is indeed worse in the capital. On Sri Lankan players wearing masks
“It’s not a good scene that a visiting team is playing an international game wearing masks. Pollution is worsening everyday. This is not earning a good name for the country. I think Delhi must control pollution. Delhi must sit together and decide on it [pollution issue]. I felt very ashamed otherwise I would not have said this…This is not a political issue but a genuine issue,” said Mamata.
