A man broke into the family home of cricketer Ed Cowan on Thursday, a day after he was named as a potential opener in the first test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

A man broke into the family home of cricketer Ed Cowan on Thursday, a day after he was named as a potential opener in the first test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The person was arrested after nearly four hours of standoff between him and the police.
“At about midday today police were called to the Cowan family’s home at Darling Point in eastern Sydney, after a neighbour saw a man climbing through the window,” the Seven Network reported.
The man, who allegedly claimed he had a gun, barricaded himself inside a bedroom and held police at bay for almost four hours.
“I’ve been told there’s a guy in the house and he’s barricaded himself and the tactical squad is here and all the police are here,” the cricketer’s father Richard Cowan told the Seven Network.
“To have this happen has spoiled the day, but that’s life.”
A police official confirmed that police from Rose Bay had been called to a property at Darling Point Road, the APP reported.
When police arrived they saw a man leaving a house, but when they tried to arrest him he went back inside the premises. The man then threatened to harm himself, it said.
Officers from the tactical operations squad were called in, and they stormed the premises and arrested the man. The man was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for assessment, but no charges have been laid yet, police said.
The home intrusion came after it was announced yesterday that Cowan would join the Australian cricket team for the Boxing Day Test.
The 29-year-old left-hander is set to open the batting in Melbourne. (PTI)
