Kolkata: Bengal today picked a 16-member squad led by Manoj Tiwary to compete in the pre-season Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Invitational Tournament in Bengaluru and Mysore from July 22 to August 18. The notable omission from the squad is that of Bengal pace spearhead Ashok Dinda and according to selectors he has been rested. The Cricket Association of Bengal also decided to send six players — Writam Porel, Promod Chandila, Sandipan Das, Sayan Ghosh, Ayan Bhattacharya and Ananta Sinha — to attend a camp in Karataka under VVS Laxman and TA Sekar. The surprise entry has come in Satyabrata Khagensdanath Murmu, who hails from insurgency afflicted region of Jhargram. If he eventually makes it to Bengal’s Ranji Trophy squad, he’ll be the first-ever tribal player to field in a Ranji Trophy match. Satyabrata apparently has travelled seven hours daily from his village to Kolkata for his pursuit of cricket. He was selected in the team for this same pre-season tournament two years ago, where he had scored 62 and 68, but had subsequently got injured.
While Pragyan Ojha has retained his place in the squad, Bengal’s fast bowler Ashok Dinda has been axed from the side. The latter was last in action in the recently concluded Indian Premier League. He played for Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2016 edition. He picked up 11 wickets in IPL 2016.
Squad:
Manoj Tiwary (c), Sudip Chatterjee (v-c), Satyabrata Murmu, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prosenjit Das, Pankaj Shaw, Koushik Ghosh, Writtick Chatterjee, Ritwik Roychowdhury, Veer Pratap Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Aamir Gani, Mukesh Kumar, Amit Kuila, Ishan Porel, Agniv Pan.
