Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a score of 138 from 139 balls when he attempted a pull off a rising delivery by Mitchell Starc, only to get caught in the mid-wicket region by Glenn Maxwell, with Starc collecting his fifth wicket in the process. India were 262 for the loss of seven wickets during the penultimate over of the match, as they lost their biggest hope of setting Australia a stiff target in order to get an early advantage during the second innings of the game. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was bowled off the very next delivery to give Starc his career-best figures of six for 43.

Earlier, MS Dhoni had won the toss and elected to bat first. The only change in the Australian team was that Gurinder Sandhu has walked in place of Xavier Doherty. Sandhu is the first man of Indian origin to play for Australia. India did not field Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. Akshar Patel is in there for Jadeja.
