The track at Chittagong is expected produce more turn as the game progresses, and Bangladesh have already added 374 for 4 in the opening day of the first Test. Mominul Haq was the destroyer-in-chief, remaining unbeaten on 175 off a mere 203 balls. The Sri Lanka spinners were reduced to nothingness, so much so that the veteran Rangana Herath went wicketless for 100 runs.

Tamim Iqbal provided a brisk start after his team elected to bat first. His 52 off 53 set the tone for the batsmen to come. Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera bowled a quicker one to dissect the delivery between Tamim’s bat and pad. Imrul Kayes too had a good time in the middle, but Lakshan Sandakan cut short his innings at 40.

The turnaround began when Mushfiqur Rahim joined Mominul. Together they added as many as 236 runs for the third wicket, sucking away all the momentum from the Sri Lankans. In the process, Mominul also became only the sixth Bangladeshi to 2,000 Test runs.  Their new captain Mahmudullah requires another 51 runs to reach the feat.

Mushfiqur, however, missed out on the opportunity to score big. Sri Lanka inflicted two quick blows with the new ball. Suranga Lakmal first had Mushfiqur behind and then castled Liton Das’ defence.

At the crease are Mominul and Mahmudullah staring at a colossal total.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh 374 for 4 (Tamim Iqbal 52, Mominul Haque 175*, Mushfiqur Rahim 92; Suranga Lakmal 2 for 34, Dilruwan Perera 1 for 98) vs Sri Lanka
