MS Dhoni handed the One-Day International (ODI) cap to young Indian pacer Barinder Sran ahead of the first ODI between India and Australia at Perth on Tuesday. It is the first ODI of the five-match ODI series. The ODI series will be followed by the three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series between these two nations. After spending four months Down Under, team India are back here and this time with a new young side led by their very own Dhoni. The Indian limited-overs skipper will be in action after a very long time. The ODI and T20I series against South Africa in November 2015 was his last assignment. India played two warm-up matches before the ODI series began and Sran featured in those matches, with decent performances. The first match was a T20 and India, batting first, posted a total of 182 in 20 overs. The visitors’ huge total was courtesy of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan’s innings of 74 runs each. In reply to that, Western Australia XI were struggling at 26 for 2 with Sran making both the breakthroughs for India. The second warm-up match was a 50-over game where again batting first, India set a target of 250 for WA XI. Although Sran went wicket-less in that game, he maintained a very economical spell giving just 22 runs in his 7 overs.

The last time India played on the Australian soil was the unfortunate ICC Cricket World Cup 2015’s semi-final at Melbourne. It was against the same opponents and that match had ended India’s reign as the world champions and Australia eventually won the World Cup by beating New Zealand in the final.
