Mahela Jayawardene has lambasted the Decision Review System (DRS) for its inconsistency and the cloud of ambiguity that hovers over the use of technology. Referring to an LBW decision against Daniel Vettori which was initially ruled not out but on review the Hawkeye showed the ball to be hitting the middle stump. The decision should have been overturned but for the two point five meter rule that saved the batsman and the not out verdict stood. The ball had struck the batsman three meters from the stump.

In fact the International Cricket Council (ICC) had tweaked the same rule, which then empowered the umpires to reconsider their decision if the ball was shown to be hitting the middle stump irrespective of the distance of impact from the stumps. The ICC was compelled to make the necessary change in the wake of a similar verdict in an India-England World Cup match in 2011 which raised a furore, when Ian Bell was ruled not out sighting the two point five meter rule.  Jayawardene was furious about the fact that a simple matter of the ball showing to hit middle stump can be overlooked courtesy a rule that completely defies logic. However, Jayawardene remains a fan of the DRS except a couple of issues that he felt  needed immediate addressing.
