Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer have all registered appeals against their lengthy bans imposed for spot-fixing, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed.
Former Test captain Butt was banned for 10 years, fast bowler Asif for seven, while teenage seamer Aamer was handed a five-year penalty after all were found guilty of spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test against England last year.
All are also facing criminal prosecution in Britain with an initial court appearance set for London on March 17. “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered the appeals filed by Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer and Salman Butt against the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal’s decision of February 5,” said a CAS statement. “The cases will be handled in accordance with the procedural rules set out in the Code of Sports-related Arbitration.
“The parties will first exchange written submissions and will then be heard at a hearing, the date of which will be fixed at a later stage.”
