Sri Lanka’s leading spinner, Rangana Herath is likely miss the First Test against New Zealand at Christchurch.
According to stuff.co.nz Herath will miss the first Test against the Kiwis due to a groin Injury sustained in Sri Lanka’s previous assignment which was the One-Day International series against England.
Angelo Mathews suggested that there was only an outside chance that the left arm spinner could recover in time for the first Test. The Sri Lankan captain was quoted as saying,
“He’s still injured so depending on his fitness he might arrive, but [we’re] very doubtful for the first game.” He also alluded to the void left in the Sri Lankan middle order with the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene, “We’re playing without Mahela for the first time in about 18 years and that’s going to be a challenge for us,
But there’s pressure on all of us anyway, this is going to be a challenging series. Playing against New Zealand in New Zealand is going to be tough. They’ve been playing really good cricket in the recent past.” added Mathews
