In Ranji Trophy season 2016-17, Round 7, Day One, Maharashtra piled up 352 for the loss of 5 wickets at Chennai. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Maharashtra made full use of the advantage and put up a healthy total at the close of play. Skipper Kedar Jadhav had a good day in office as he first won the toss and then notched up a quickfire ton to put his team in the pole position. Before being dismissed by Syed Mohammed, he hit a stroke-filled 115 off just 106 balls, hitting 15 fours and 3 lusty sixes. Apart from him, Naushad Shaikh and Swapnil Gugale also hit half-centuries. Starting the innings, Gugale and Murtaza Trunkwala added 54 for the first wicket before the latter got out for 22. He was replaced by Shaikh, who added 29 with Gugale for the second wicket before Mrinmoy Dutta got rid of Gugale for 50. From this point, skipper Jadhav and Shaikh dominated the proceedings, putting up 183 for the third wicket. Jadhav was in an ominous form, as he hit everything that came his way. His innings finally ended when he was caught by Rahul Hazarika. Shaikh was then joined by Ankit Bawane, as the duo added 59 for the fourth wicket.
Maharashtra then lost both Bawane (38) and Shaikh (97) in quick succession, with score reading 327 for 5. Shaikh missed his third First-Class ton by a mere 3 runs. Chirag Khurana (14 not out) and Vishant More (9 not out) guided their team to 352 for 5 at stumps. For Assam, Syed picked up two wickets while Dutta, Abu Nechim Ahmed and Sarupam Purkayastha picked up a wicket each.
