Priyank Kirit Panchal slammed yet another century in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 and completed 1,000 runs in the season but Gujarat failed to take upper hand in their clash against Tamil Nadu. On the first day of their Group A match being played at the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Stadium in Belgavi, Gujarat are struggling at 267 for 7 at stumps. Akshar Patel is batting on 28 while Chintan Gaja is unbeaten at 2 as Gujarat ended up squandering a good chance to put up big score on the board batting first.
Panchal fell after scoring 113 off 180 balls with 17 boundaries but found no stable partner throughout his innings. Tamil Nadu will be content with the way their bowlers responded by not allowing Gujarat to get away with a solid start provided by Panchal. T Natarajan and Baba Aparajith claimed 2 wickets each, while Aswin Crist, Aushik Srinivas and Vijay Shankar grabbed one each to derail Gujarat’s innings on the opening day of the match itself. Gujarat batsmen remained guilty of throwing away their starts as a lot of them were dismissed in their 20s and 30s which hampered their chances.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Raval was the second highest run-getter for Gujarat with 35 runs, while Akshar’s 28 not out is the third highest individual contribution in the innings. Opener Samit Gohel fell for 23, Bhargav Merai for 11, Rujul Bhatt for 12 and Manpreet Juneja for 25.
Brief scores:
Gujarat 267 for 7 (Priyank Panchal 113, Akshar Patel 28*; T Natarajan 2 for 62, Baba Aparajith 2 for 29) vs Tamil Nadu
