Captain Askhdeep Nath (106) and Priyam Garg (113*) struck centuries in a mammoth partnership for the fourth wicket. Opting to bat first at the AB Vajpayee International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow proved costly for the hosts as they found themselves in early trouble thanks to a double-strike from Saurabh Das.
Saurabh got rid of both UP openers, removing first Samarth Singh for a duck with the third delivery of the innings. Rana Dutta then bowled Umang Sharma on 7 before Shivam Chaudhary (10) became Saurabh’s second victim.
UP were struggling at 21/3 when Akshdeep and Priyam got together. The duo stabilised the innings and went on to add 201 runs between them before being separated.
Akshdeep, who was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 3.8 crore at the IPL auction, celebrated that by hitting his fifth first-class century. He consumed 216 deliveries during which he struck 12 fours and two sixes.
His parntet Priyam recorded his second century in FC cricket and has so far struck 12 fours and a six.
It was Rana who gave Tripura a much needed breakthrough when he pinned Akshdeep in front taking his second wicket of the day.
At stumps, Priyam was unbeaten alongside Rinku Singh (18*)
Brief Scores: Uttar Pradesh 257/4 (Priyam Garg 113, Akshdeep Nath 106; Rana Dutta 2/26) vs Tripura on Day 1
