Elite Group A Day 4

Krishnappa Gowtham was the star on the final day as Karnataka crushed Railways by 176 runs in the round 7 of their Ranji Trophy, Elite Group A clash in Shimoga.

Chasing 362, Railways had ended the penultimate day at 44/1. It was always going to be a daunting task to survive the fourth day but the visitors began on a decent note.

The overnight pair of Saurabh Wakaskar (44) and Nitin Bhille (39) built a solid partnership, extending the score to 85 before a run out gave Karnataka their first breakthrough of the day. Wakaskar departed after hitting seven fours during his 96-ball stay. Another partnership was taking shape between that involved Bhille and Pratham Singh.

It lasted 41 runs before Gowtham pinned Bhille in front for his first wicket. Captain Arindam Ghosh walked out to the middle and the resistance continued. However, Pratham holed out after scoring 48 off 151 which opened the floodgates.

Gowtham razed through the Railways batting order, finishing with figures of 6/30 from 24 overs. Arindam was left watching his team crumble at the other end, remaining unbeaten on 24 with Railways 185-all out.

It was Karnataka’s second win of the season.

Brief Scores: Karnataka 214 and 290/2d beat Railways 143 and 185-all out (Pratham Singh 48; K Gowtham 6/30) by 176 runs
