Uttar Pradesh, locked in battle with Jharkhand for a place in the quarters, made a fine start to their Ranji Trophy 2018-19 Round 9 Elite C match bundling out Assam for 175 on Monday. Yash Dayal and Saurabh Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Ankit Rajpoot and Imtiaz Ahmed pocketed two each.

Put into bat at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, Assam lost both their openers Rishav Das and Rahul Hazarika inside 10 overs. Hazarika was the first to go after he was castled by Dayal for a duck in the sixth over, while Das followed his partner three overs later after he was dismissed by Rajpoot.

Assam lost their next three wickets in under 10 overs. However, Sarupam Purkayastha and Pallav Das steadied the ship with a 73-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Purkayastha, who scored 35 off 63 was the first to go after he was caught by Mohammad Saif to hand Saurabh Kumar his first wicket. Das, who top scored with 75 off 105 with the help of 10 boundaries and one six, was dismissed by Kumar. The lower order crumbled in quick time.

For UP, Dayal returned with brilliant figures of 3/15 in his 10 overs, while Kumar went for 25 runs in his 11 overs with three wickets.

In reply, UP lost Samarth Singh to Ranjeet Mali for 19. Saif and the other opener Umang Sharma were batting on 12 and 32 respectively when stumps were drawn.
