Uttar Pradesh are fighting for the only spot remaining to qualify for the quarterfinals spot from Group C and at close of play on Day 3 are in pole position to take at least three, if not seven points, against Assam.
Starting the day at 377/5, Uttar Pradesh were buoyed by centuries from overnight batsman Rinku Singh (149) and Upendra Yadav (138) while Saurabh Kumar added 59 off 56 balls. Uttar Pradesh were all out for 619, taking a big lead of 444 runs.
Assam, who were bundled out for 175 in their first dig, however out up a stern resistance in their second innings with openers Rishav Das and Rahul Hazarika adding an unbeaten 102 runs for the first wicket when stumps were drawn on day three.
Das is unbeaten on 37 off 94 balls while Hazarika scored 56 not out off 77 balls. They trail UP by 342 runs and an outright result in favour of Assam looks near impossible, Assam can block UP path for a win. UP, who are in close contest with Jharkhand for the remaining qualification spot from the group, after Rajasthan qualified with a whooping 51 points, would eye to see off the final day without them batting again. UP need just three points to claim the quarters spot, which they have pocketed after claiming the outright win.
