Harsha Bhogle, India‘s renowned cricket commentator on Monday at a function orgainised by Odia newspaper, ‘Sambad’ on its 30th anniversary said on ‘The Winning Ways’, “Winning always is not about doing the spectacular but doing the small things well.”
According to The New Indian Express, he asked the audience “Is it better to lose a limited over game by 20 runs without really trying to win than losing it by 60 runs in pursuit of victory?”
“Unfortunately, in India, even a four-year old is made to understand what failure is while seeking admission to a nursery school,” he said.
He also said, “Complacency is the nemesis of long term success. One has to constantly strive to better oneself. If you are not better today than you were yesterday, you are finished.”
A column from legendary cricketer, Steve Waugh was also cited by Harsha on Michael Clarke, who was dropped from the Australian squad. He said that it was the best thing that could ever have happened to him and his ambition to lead the nation in the World Cup.
Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Chairman of the Eastern Media Limited (EML) and Editor of ‘Sambad’ praised Bhogle and said he was one of the gems in Indian cricket, not as a player, but as a commentator. “If cricket is religion and Sachin Tendulkar is the God, then Harsha Bhogle is the high priest of cricket,” said Patnaik.
Bhogle was described as the ‘Voice of Indian Cricket’ by Ranjib Biswal, the chairman of the IPL.
