India are well placed in the the First Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin‘s 6 for 46 on Day One of the game. The off-spin of Ashwin claimed six Sri Lankan wickets, which broke the backbone of their batting. Sri Lanka could only managed to score 183 in their first innings. The innings only lasted 49.4 overs. Ashwin’s figure of 6 for 46 is now the best bowling performance in an innings by an Indian bowler in Sri Lanka. The previous best was Harbhajan Singh’s 6 for 102 back in 2008 at the same venue. He got a 10-wicket haul in that game and India won the Test. Now Ashwin has given India a good opportunity to repeat that performance. Here is the list of top five bowlers with best bowling performances in Sri Lanka:
Player | M | I | W | BBI |
Ravichandran Ashwin | 1 | 1 | 6 | 6 for 46 |
Harbhajan Singh | 10 | 15 | 25 | 6 for 102 |

Ashwin also registered the best first-innings figures for any Indian spinner outside India. His figures of 13.4-2-46-6 are significantly better than the 30-6-94-6 (8-ball overs) by Bhagwat Chandrasekhar against New Zealand at Eden Park back in 1975-76.
