Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered a massive 58-run defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT), as the latter now secured the top spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) points table. This was the third defeat that RR had faced in this season, as they are now on the seventh place in the standings so far. Things did not go right for Rajasthan as the team ended up giving 217 runs in 20 overs, while getting wrapped up in 159 runs.

Things got worse, as the team had failed to finish their overs in time, and skipper Sanju Samson was given a fine of INR 24 lakh for the cause. This was the second time that RR faced a penalty for not finishing their overs. The team had earlier failed to finish their overs on time during their clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and the stand-in captain Riyan Parag was fined INR 12 lakh.

An IPL media release stated that the remaining members of playing XI will be fined either 25 percent of their match fee od INR 6 lakhs, whichever one is lesser. “The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the IPL media release read.

Earlier, if a captain got fined thrice for a slow over-rate, he used to get a suspension for a match. In the first match of the IPL 2025, Hardik Pandya missed the match for Mumbai Indians (MI) for the same reason. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) changed the rule and hence, Sanju will not get banned.
