Initially, the bowlers failed to restrict a batting-strong Afghanistan team as they put up 170 for Scotland to chase. The Scotland team had started off their chase as the openers added over 80 runs but the middle-order batsmen failed to maintain the momentum and their innings came to an end with 156 for 5.
