Dhawan’s world cup campaign came to an early end after being struck on thumb during a round-robin match against Australia. He was subsequently ruled out of the entire tournament after being kept under observation for some time in England.
Dhawan had started the tournament on a superb note, even scoring a century in the Australia contest where he batted through despite being hit on the thumb by a Pat Cummins bouncer.
Subsequent scans confirmed a hairline fracture ruling him out for up to six weeks. In his absence, KL Rahul opened the innings alongside vice-captain Rohit Sharma as India made the semi-finals where they lost to New Zealand.
Rishabh Pant was called up as his replacement as the team management requested for a left-hander.
The 33-year-old has found a place in India’s T20I and ODI squads for the West Indies tour beginning August 3.
