Indian star opening batter Shubman Gill received a warning from the umpire after he secured the catch of Australia’s batter Travis Head during their Champions Trophy semifinal clash in Dubai. The incident is of the second ball of 9th over, where Travis sent the ball flying towards the long-off.

Varun Chakravarthy had bowled a fuller delivery towards the off and middle, where Travis got forward but failed to calculate it well. This caused to a mismatched shot as the ball went flying. Shubman Gill came in running and took a clean catch.

Even though Gill took a clean catch, the umpires were not happy with it, as he threw the ball right after he caught it. As a result, a warning was given to the youngster.

Though there is no specific rule that states the time for how long a fielder must hold the ball to secure a catch, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) states that the player needs to have complete control over the ball and their own movement for the catch to be considered complete.

The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement,” the rule read.
