Somerset sign their star player Marcus Trescothick for yet another year, making it the 25th contract between the team and the player. Trescothick first represented Somerset in 1993 and since that, he has scored around 25000 runs for the club, scoring 978 runs in the current season at an average of 54.33. Earlier this year, the 40-year-old player stepped down from the county club’s captaincy but made sure he played and served the club like before, scoring crucial runs. The player has so far scored 49 centuries in his career with Somerset, which is a record in itself. READ: At 40, Marcus Trescothick still rules English domestic cricket
Talking about the long alliance, Trescothick told to espncricinfo.com, “I have made no secret of my desire to carry on playing for Somerset for as long as I can. I’m really enjoying my cricket at the moment and I still have the hunger to succeed. I am delighted that I will be a part of this club for another year.
“It’s a really exciting time for the County at the moment with the talent that we have coming through and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next 12 months.”
Club’s director Matthew Maynard was quoted saying, “Marcus still has so much to offer, both on and off the field. The runs he scores, the experience he brings and the knowledge that he passes on to the younger players make him a vital member of this squad.”
Earlier, while stepping down from Somerset’s captaincy, the player had revealed, “I have loved being Captain of Somerset. It has been a tremendous privilege and honour to lead this great Club over many years but now is the right time for change. I will be giving Chris and Jim my unconditional support, as well as focusing on scoring as many runs as I can in the season ahead. I would like to thank all of the players, coaches and Members for their support during my tenure as the Club Captain.”
