South Africa defeated West Indies by 40 runs on an eventful third day of the second Test on Saturday to extend their dominance over the Caribbean side. The Proteas set a challenging target of 263 after West Indian quick Jayden Seales took his career-best figures of 6/61 and helped in bowling out the visitors for 246 runs in their second innings during the morning session.
The hosts ended up losing wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 222. Seales was the last wicket to fall just minutes before the scheduled close of play. He fell to Player of the Series Keshav Maharaj who claimed his 13th wicket of the 2-match series. South Africa won the 2-match series by 1-0 and took home the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy.
The win extended South Africa’s unbeaten Test series run against the West Indies from the first-ever series meeting between the 2 teams in 1998/99. The Windies haven’t been able to defeat the Proteas in a Test series for 25 years now and that record now is set to continue.
“For a team that is in a transition phase we really did well to come away with this success,” said a delighted Maharaj.
“Getting ready for Test cricket is always part of my plan, no matter what other formats I play. I always have a red ball in my bag,” the South African spinner added.
