Electing to bowl, South Africa made early inroads into Sri Lanka’s middle-order after Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi dismissed Upul Tharanga and Oshada Fernando respectively.

While there was a 42-run stand between Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis, Andile Phehlukwayo and Anrich Nortje ran through the Sri Lankan batting unit and threatened to dismiss the visitors even before they could cross 100-run mark. (ALSO READ: We can’t have a mediocre batting line-up at World Cup, need to raise standards: Faf du Plessis)

However, Isuru Udana scored a quickfire 78 off 57 balls, hitting seven fours and four sixes, as Sri Lanka’s last three wickets managed to add 92 runs, with Udana doing majority of the scoring. He was eventually dismissed by Phehlukwayo in the 40th over.

For the Faf du Plessis-led side, Nortje was their most successful bowlers, scalping three wickets while Phehlukwayo returned with two wickets.

South Africa, however, still remain favourites to register their fourth consecutive win in this series.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 189 all-out (Isuru Udana 78; Avishka Fernando 29; Anrich Nortje 3/57, Andile Phehlukwayo 2/21) vs South Africa
