Sports minister Ajay Maken on Tuesday promised action against match fixing in sports after a television news channel claimed to have blown the lid off “murky deals” in the IPL among players, organisers, owners and big guns of Indian cricket.
A sting operation conducted by India TV prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to warn that stringent action will be taken if the report is found to be true.
The channel, India TV, claimed it had done a sting operation in which many players confessed on hidden camera they get much more than their prescribed auction under the table.
On Tuesday, BJP leader Kirti Azad demanded in the parliament that the central government should take strict action against match-fixing or spot-fixing allegations, Zee News reported.
The sports minister also appealed to the cricket board to take matter seriously and resolve it as soon as possible.
He said, “It is a challenge as well as an opportunity for the BCCI as it would help them eradicate the menace of match-fixing. They should resolve the issue early.”
Maken added that every sports lover in the country wants action against match-fixers, and claimed that maliciouos activities happen in other sports as well.
“Not only in cricket but fixing takes place in other sports as well,” he said.
A former Indian cricketer and BJP leader Azad asked the government to set up an internal auditing of different sports bodies and associations.
Azad also raised doubts over the shifting of the second edition of the IPL to South Africa.
